Our Vision

Vision: All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people grow up safely in their home, receive a good education, and grow up healthy and proud of who they are.

Target: To eliminate the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia’s child protection systems by 2040.

Building Blocks

  1. All families enjoy access to quality, culturally safe, universal and targeted services necessary for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to thrive
  2. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations participate in and have control over decisions that affect their children
  3. Law, policy and practice in child and family welfare are culturally safe and responsive
  4. Governments and services are accountable to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Statement of Commitment

The Statement of Commitment reflects our intent to work collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their organisations to achieve the goal of the Family Matters campaign. This commitment requires all signatories to work in accordance with key principles, and to implement corresponding actions. The six core principles of the Family Matters campaign are as follows:

Principles

  • Applying a child-focussed approach
  • Ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations participate in and have control over decisions that affect their children
  • Protecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s right to live in culture
  • Pursuing evidence-based responses
  • Supporting, healing and strengthening families
  • Challenging systemic racism and inequities
